Exceptional Ash Blonde on Brown Hair

Q&A with style creator, Rachel Menchken
Designer @ Hair To Dye For in Easton, PA

How would you describe this look?

This is a dimensional blonde balayage. I took panels of hair and painted them using a clay lightener. I love the tonality and how all the colors blend seamlessly into one another.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Balayage is so universal and can be done on all different colors and types of hair. However, if someone is looking to go this light from darker hair, it can take multiple sessions.

Balayage is very low maintenance, so it is good for people who have a busy lifestyle and aren’t looking to come in every 6 weeks for touch-ups. Because the hair is lightened, I always recommend using a good moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo and heat protecting spray when using hot tools.

Head-Turning Black to Blonde

Q&A with style creator, Nga Bui
Hairstylist / Makeup Artist @ Creations Unisex Salon in Philadelphia, PA

How would you describe this look?

I did a bleach balayage on her black hair then toner with 9n + 9v + 9t (Redken shades), and it came out like this.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Use purple shampoo every time you wash your hair. It will take the yellow out and make your hair blonder. Her hair is curly and really thick, so having a keratin treatment regularly will make her hair smoother and shinier. Also, use a deep conditioner.

We are a Paul Mitchell salon, so all products we use are theirs. Some products we use are also from Redken and Brazilian Blowout.

Marvelous Vanilla Blonde to Rose Gold

Q&A with style creator, Nikki Parsons

How would you describe this look?

I consider this look to be a vivid reverse ombré. This means the root area is lighter than the ends, which are a fantasy color.  I love the rose gold trend because it’s a way for my clients to have a special color that stands out but is still somewhat conservative for work.

It’s important to make sure an ombré looks good straight or wavy, but I prefer it wavy. It shows off the dimension and the color itself.

I am also currently loving the lob trend and I think the rose gold looks best with it. It’s a fun and romantic style when it’s all tied together.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are considering this look and you aren’t blonde, check with your stylist to make sure this is a look you can obtain. If so, start with a few full highlight sessions and be patient. Your ends need to be light enough and healthy enough to accept and hold the rose gold.

I recommend purchasing the Olaplex Steps 3-5 System through an Olaplex salon. This is your hair bond building/strengthening treatment and your shampoo and conditioner.  You can break some of your hair bonds by twirling your hair. The Olaplex will strengthen your strands and bring them back to life. The healthier your hair, the better your color holds.

Rose gold can fade extremely easily. Any of my guests who have gotten this color are urged to wash their hair in cold water exclusively. I always recommend a good heat protector with UV protection, because excessive heat and sun will cause the color to fade. My favorite heat protector is Living Proof’s Restore Instant Protection Spray. It is a light spray suitable for all hair types. You still may need a touch up on your rosy ends within a few weeks of getting it done, or you can enjoy the different looks you get as the color fades!

I personally feel that most workplaces are being a little more lenient when it comes to color trends like this, but make sure your boss is cool with it. As long as you don’t mind the maintenance of this color, I think it works for anyone.

Eye-Catching Blonde Balayage

Hairstylist @ Rockit Studio in Schaumburg, IL

How would you describe this look?

This look is a non-committal look. There is very little upkeep on it as you can grow it out, and it will still look flawless because of the seamless blend.

This is a very neutral blonde and will look great on anyone wanting to be blonde. This cut and color will look amazing curled with beach waves, and it will really show the dimension within the color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is for someone who doesn’t like to get their hair done often or moms on the go. The most upkeep you would have is a toner refresher and a trim every 6-8 weeks.

My favorite products for this look is Olaplex for all my blondes (a must!). For styling I love Matrix miracle treat 20 and Kenra blow dry spray. Both will protect your hair from heat styling. Blondes need extra at-home care!

This look is almost great for people with thin hair.
